ILAW NG TAHANAN PUBLISHING, INC is a Filipino corporation dedicated to making quality books for Filipino families as well as supplementary curriculum materials for schools and libraries. It has two subsidiaries known to retail markets as Tahanan Books (adult division) and Tahanan Books for Young Readers (juvenile division). Named for the Filipino word for “home,” Tahanan aims to nurture a passion for learning with books that celebrate Philippine culture and history.
Incorporated in 1991, Tahanan launched its maiden titles (the “Great Lives” biography series of Philippine heroes) in 1992 at the Philippine Book Fair. Renowned for its thoughtful attention to both text and artwork, Tahanan is a nine-time winner of the Philippine National Book Award for Children’s Literature awarded by the National Book Development Board and the Manila Critics Circle. It has also collected the Ceres Alabado Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature as well as three Gintong Aklat Awards given by the Book Development Association of the Philippines.
Over the last quarter-century, Tahanan has produced an impressive array of over one hundred fifty titles. Tahanan’s diverse publist showcases biographies of Philippine heroes, folk tale and short story anthologies, reference and science books, bilingual & Filipino picture books, not to mention a wildly popular line of Pinoy pop culture books. The company has recently enhanced its publist by releasing big book and board book editions of its more popular titles.
In addition to its own publist, Tahanan serves a book packager for third parties. It produced for UNICEF a ten picture-book series on the rights of the child, a career series for young people for Museo Pambata Foundation, Inc., and a picture book about the journey of a grain of rice from paddy field to plate for the Asia Rice Foundation.
In 2010, publisher Reni Roxas’s anthology HANGGANG SA MULI: Homecoming Stories for the Filipino Soul (nominated, National Book Award for Best Anthology) gave voice to the sentiments of Filipinos living in the diaspora. The book was an attempt to reach out to the millions of Filipinos scattered around the globe. The globalization of the Filipino has impacted the landscape of Philipine publishing in more ways than one. Although the majority of Tahanan’s talent base is in the Philippines, the company works with Filipino artists, authors, and book designers in such places as Paris, London, New York, Vancouver, and Saipan. Tahanan’s own publisher and editor-in-chief, Reni Roxas, divides her time between Manila and Seattle, Washington.
In both at home and abroad, there is a resurging interest in the Filipino language, giving rise to a demand for books in the vernacular as well as bilingual books in English and Filipino. The Department of Education’s directive to launch a 19-language Mother Tongue program will hopefully produce a renaissance in the publishing of regional dialects and languages. In keeping with the times, Tahanan has shifted from publishing children’s books in English to publishing bilingual titles or books in Filipino. Its new book Philippine Proverbs is a collection of popular sayings culled from 21 vernacular languages and dialects.
Tahanan holds its main office in Legaspi Village in Makati City, Philippines. It maintains a satellite office in Seattle, Washington, under the U.S. registered company Tahanan Books Corporation. Tahanan Books are sold in North America through the US website tahananbooks.com; selected titles are available on Amazon. In the Philippines, Tahanan products are available in all major bookstore chains and museum gift shops, as well as to walk-in customers to our Makati office. This year, Tahanan asserts its online presence by launching its Philippine website www.tahananbooks.ph.
Every September, Tahanan Books unveils its newest titles (as well as unbeatable backlist deals) at the much-anticipated Manila International Book Fair in SMX Mall of Asia.
Next year, 2017, marks Tahanan’s twenty-five years of creating meaningful books for Filipinos. Under its flagship company Ilaw ng Tahanan Publishing, Inc. —ilaw ng Tahanan being a gentle phrase known by most Filipinos to mean “mother” (the light and life of the home)—Tahanan Books remains passionately committed to making world-class publications that shine a lantern on Philippine culture and heritage.
It’s not unusual to hear a parent say, “My children grew up with Tahanan Books.”
We invite you to come home to Tahanan Books, where the love of reading begins.
For manuscript submissions:
Picture book manuscripts may be emailed in their entirety. For longer works, we prefer a query letter and sample outline. We welcome manuscripts in both English and Filipino, with a preference for works in Filipino. We are looking for evocative language, a strong sense of story, a lovely surprise tucked in, and pieces that leave the reader wanting to read more.
